We often drove by Mountain Mike's as they were building out their new spot off of the feeder freeway from I-25 to Voyager. Having never been, Mrs. RJG and I were curious how good it is. We waited until football season, and on this fine Saturday at lunch we ordered online for takeout, a medium sausage pie to enjoy while watching a few plays of the Texas / Ohio State opener. Arch Manning is the starting quarterback. The grandson of Archie Manning, who I watched play for the Saints when I was a kid. There's just something magical and nostalgic about the first week of college football (and the NFL when it starts next week).
The restaurant is a large space and is geared for both local takeout (they have delivery as well) as well as for diners. No doubt they wanted to be "close to the action" near the Ford Amphitheater. Upon arrival back home, Mrs. RJG had the comal ready to go to ensure the proper crispness. A medium is a 12" pie, and was plenty for the two of us. We even have leftovers for appetizers later tonight. It's a filling pizza, no doubt due to the heavier crust. The pizza could have used more sauce (like I always say) but it's a very good red. The cheese was nondistinctive. The Italian sausage is of a higher grade than usual and was delicious. Overall it's a good pizza, though not a clear favorite for sure. Given its local proximity, and the fact that we enjoy pizza while watching football, there's no reason not to add it to the RJG Rotation. And we may grab another pie before the season is done.
Mountain Mike's started in 1978 in Palo Alto, California. Today they have 324 locations, most of them in California. They're also in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Texas, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin. In Colorado they have three locations, with the others in Parker and Aurora. For my former NE Tarrant readers, you have one in the former RJG HQ of Keller and one in Roanoke.
