Mariscos y Tacos Los Compas ~ San Jose, California

Mobile location - food truck Mr. Music (that's me!) has accompanied Lady Music to San Jose, CA to attend her mom's 80th birthday party! Lady Music's brother-in-law is from Jalisco and a foodie specializing in regional specialties. Now, I have eaten plenty of birria (meat cooked slowly over hot rocks and shredded) in my day and a huge fan of some fresh birria de borego (lamb) with a cup of consommé (broth made from the meat drippings), but when Senor Food asked me to go with him for some quesabirria tacos, I was excited to try something new! Mariscos Los Compas is a food truck, or should I say a pair of food trucks (ed: love the logo!). Mariscos, or seafood, is what they specialize in on their main food truck at a local farmers market. And from what I've seen, it looks excellent! I want to try it. The other truck specializes in quesabirria tacos! As you can draw from the name, quesabirria is birria with cheese. But it's not quite that simple (or plain). The birria i...

La Esperanza ~ Long Beach, California

Orange Ave @ 17th. They have a second location in Torrance. Lady Music had never had Salvadoran food and had recently read an article about some in the area. We decided to try a close by place called La Esperanza. They have a large menu with many Salvadoran, Guatemalan, and Mexican dishes. But we were there for Salvadoran delights! They make handmade papusas to order with quite an array of fillings including loroco (an herb from Central America) and chiltepin (a small, potent chili pepper) as well as the usual meats, shrimp and other veggies. We ordered pork with cheese and decided to try spinach and cheese (definitely not traditional fare). We also got sauteed plantains with refried black beans and Salvadoran crema. And got a Guatemalan tamale with chicken and Guatemalan rice. The young lady that took my order was super nice and spoke English very well, which was good as I had questions. I watched the woman working there form the masa and make the papusas. Nothing like fresh made food...

La Salvadoreña Pupusas - Denver, Colorado

1000 Knox Ct, Denver, CO 80204 Another place I came to know renovating a house 2 blocks away. Best value for the portions of anyplace (food truck or otherwise) in Denver, also excellent chow. Dinner to share consisting of fish tacos and a gynormous burrito (generally resulting in leftovers for 2 as well) costs $12-15. And their pupusas are the selling point of the place. I have had most varieties and find them all to be great, fresh and tasty. Did not live close by for long enough to really delve through the menu, but everything I tried was great. If I was still living in the neighborhood, I'd be here tonight. - Rude Dante review

Tacusa ~ Fort Worth, Texas

Our original location in far north Fort Worth is still open along with one in Arlington. The Keller locale is closed. Latest visit: Dec 2017 (Keller - closed) First visit: Sep 2015 (Fort Worth) We're always on the lookout for high quality street tacos at the RJG, and the Mrs. is a fan of the Salvadoran favorite papusas, so Tacusa came across our radar for a try. This was in 2015, and we were surprised they've recently opened another location closer by. With our local Tacos y Mas now closed up, we thought we'd give Tacusa one more try. While the front of the menu clearly portrays a Mexican taqueria, it becomes obvious quickly this is truly an El Salvadoran eatery. All the same, I stuck with street tacos and tried their carne asada, pollo, and al pastor. Priced attractively at $1.25 and listening to a sizzling kitchen, I felt I could do no wrong. Tacusa features a salsa bar with 4 different sauces, an onion/cilantro mix, lettuce, and other items. Right away I was disturbed w...

Gloria's Latin Cuisine ~ Texas chain : Colleyville

May 13, 2022 update: Gloria's is one of the few chains that have actually expanded in the last seven years. They currently have 17 in the DFW area, 3 in Houston, 2 in Austin, and 1 in San Antonio. Latest visit: Sep 2015 (Colleyville) First visit: 2003 (Addison) You may recall recently that the RJG's official boss was in town from New Jersey and we went to Trulucks in Uptown. Well that same week my former boss, and now good friend, from Phoenix was also in downtown Dallas (I sense a conference here). He's been in these pages before, but I'll rename him Danny Huston since he's a spitting image of the actor. And my friend and peer The Garland Troublemaker (who is also in a few of these posts) was on hand as well. We decided to meet at the Gloria's in Dallas (on Lemmon near Oak Lawn). I had intended on writing about that experience, when I recalled that we have a Gloria's here in Northeast Tarrant as well. The RJG's Official Mom was wanting to take me out...
