Taco Fiesta ~ Baltimore, Maryland

Latest visit: Sep 2019 First visit: Nov 2016 Taco Fiesta is my favorite taco place in the country right now. I think that’s an odd thing to say for a Texan working in Baltimore. It just can’t be can it ? Well sure it can . While I have no doubt there is competition in DFW where we resided for many years, of all the taco places I’ve tried, I’ll take Taco Fiesta. Yes, and that includes the much lauded Torchy’s that we’ve written about in these very pages. It’s not a hardcore taqueria like, say, Alvarado’s either. I suppose it tracks closest to Fuzzy’s if looking for the type of environment. It’s a counter service place (honestly not enough of those near where I work), with a full bar setup, and seating on the main level as well as upstairs. As mentioned in the Alexander’s Tavern review, I have to segregate alcohol from non-alcohol, so Taco Fiesta is strictly a to-go place for me. They have a pretty full menu, but I never get past the tacos. In fact, I rarely eat anything but carne as...

Anamia's Tex-Mex ~ Southlake, Texas

May 13, 2022 update: There are currently 6 locations in DFW: Southlake, Coppell, Plano, Trophy Club, Flower Mound, and McKinney.  Latest visit: Feb 2018 (Southlake) First visit: 2003 (Southlake) As far as the RJG is concerned, Anamia's remains our  favorite Mexican restaurant in NE Tarrant  (as I update this post in 2018). And we award them with the very rare and coveted 5.0 rating! We've been going to Anamia's ever since we first moved back to the area in 2003, so this recommendation has some heft to it. Anamia's is not inexpensive, but it's worth the extra dollars for a consistent, high quality meal, every time! Despite having "Tex-Mex" in their name, I would avoid the combo plates (they're average at best). We recommend you go straight for the Mexican specialties and never look back. Mr. RJG personally recommends Rickey's Tacos which features charbroiled white meat chicken in a homemade soft corn tortilla, heavily seasoned, that is served wit...

Meat U Anywhere ~ Trophy Club, Texas

Latest visit: Feb 2018 First visit: Jun 2016 We haven't been to Meat U Anywhere for a couple of years, even though we were - and are - praising. I can't really give a good explanation as to why, but this time we dragged along a one Mr. Music.  And a good time was had by all...  lol. Notes from our first visit continue on below. Not too much to add other than we keep trying different meats to our liking. After receiving our lunch, it didn't take long for Mrs. RJG to proclaim "this is the best barbecue I've ever had!". We don't claim BBQ aficionado status (not by a long shot), but we've had our share over the years, so it was a bold statement. And to be honest, I was inclined to agree with her. Pound for pound, meat by meat - no - we have a long way to go to prove that. But for what we ordered, we were mightily impressed right from the get go. I had a pulled pork sandwich, which was more of a mixture, similar to how chopped beef is normally prepared, to...

Grimaldi's Coal Brick-Oven Pizzeria ~ national chain : Grapevine, Texas

Latest visit: Feb 2018 (Grapevine, TX) First visit: Jul 2012 (Grapevine, TX) May 13, 2022 update: Grimaldi's exists in 11 disparate states. Texas has the most with 18. Total looks to be around 43. There was one in Denver, but it was gone before we could go, and that's a real bummer!. Basically, Grimaldi's has perfected the coal oven baked pizza formula. Apparently they use a special coal imported from Pennsylvania, that burns hotter and cleaner than traditional coal. Grimaldi's, of course, insists that all of their outlets use this coal. We've been many times over the years, and the pizza is perfect every single time. The ingredients are out of this world, and most are homemade. The sauce is delicious and the mozzarella is clearly made from local produce. I'm not even sure you can make a pizza better than this. As Dan Patrick is fond of saying: "You can't stop them, you can only hope to contain them". And we haven't even started on their de...
